Observation Report
Name of the School: ---
Location of the School: Bangkok,
Thailand
Date of Visit: 10 October 2019
One of the unique features of this school is that every class has their own display boards mounted on the outside walls of each classroom facing the hallway, thus everyone who passes by can clearly see what are posted on these boards.
I have seen and observed all 16 bulletin boards from Grades 7 to 10. They featured outstanding student works for grades 7 to 9. For Grades 10 to 12 the boards are divided into two parts: (1) student works (2) infomercials. Infomercials are educational posters that may advertise a product but still provide relevant information for the general audience. Some of the infomercials found in these boards are posters from universities, commercial plays, or clippings from magazines that are informative and appropriate to the student’s learning areas.
All display boards have different borders and styles. Some have flower patterns others use simple border cutouts. The themes of the bulletin boards are simple yet creative. They are appropriate for the intermediate level. A more colorful, creative, and extravagant boards can be found in the kindergarten area where kids would love to see various pictures and artistic designs.
The contents are purely student works both in Thai and English languages. Thus, student works are prone to grammatical error but the ones posted are the chosen best in the class.

Strengths
|
Weaknesses
|
|
Observations:
The display board on Computer Hardware is
creatively presented by using actual parts of computer hardware.
|
Realism is achieved in this display boards.
Visuals of what is seen inside a computer are featured.
|
The layout and the design of the display board
are not artistic. It lacked creativity and visual impact.
|
Judgments/
Evaluation of educational content and other aspects:
The display board is informative and educational
as it contains facts and figures that are relevant to the theme.
|
The display board is instructive and useful. It
conveys information about the functions and used of each part of the computer
that is featured on the board.
|
The arrangement of the display board is not
captivating. Too simple, thus, it draws the audience’s attention away from
it.
|
Recommendations
or Suggestions for improvement:
The display board should be dynamic, creative,
and well-organized. Boarders can be added and description boxes should be in
light colors to enhance text visibility.

My Analysis
Did the board display design reflect the likes/ interests of its target audience? Why? Why not?
The display board of the computer class on Computer Hardware reflects
the likes/interests of its target audience. It features actual part of a
computer (e.g. hard disk, motherboard, RAM, CPU, GPU, etc.) It is a very wise
decision to use real pieces and spare parts of a computer because it adds
interests to the target audience. The short descriptions of each piece also
give new information to the students.
Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand? Why? Why not?
The language used in this information board is simple and easy to
understand. It comprehensively delivers knowledge that evidently explains the
theme.
What do you think was the purpose of the board display? Was it effective? Why? Why not?
The purpose of the board display is to enhance students’ knowledge about
the internal parts of a computer. The idea is to let students recognize and
identify each part. The students may be aware of the functions of each but they
may not know what it looks like from the inside. Showcasing the actual parts of
computer hardware is really effective knowing that students will be able to
distinguish each one of them.
What suggestions can you make?
The display board is not properly designed. The layout should highlight
each piece by adding dynamism to its design. Texts should be legible enough
that audience from the farthest distance can still see the display board.
Graphics should be more detailed to add creativity on this display board.
Based on your suggestions, propose an enhance version of the display
board. Use the form below.

My Reflections
Name
at least 5 skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with
effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.
Creativity - information and content can be boring and dry. Creativity
is necessary for teachers to present ideas in a most captivating and
interesting way.
Communication - Teachers know that visual content combined with
excellent written communication skills result to effective and purposeful
display boards.
Resourceful - Effective display materials need not be new all the time.
Teachers must be able to recycle and reuse available materials while
maintaining quality and attractive display boards.
Visual Skills - The overall design and layout needs to be coherent,
balanced, and creative at the same time. To achieve all these three, a teacher
must be able to visualize the layout, create it and apply those ideas into the
display.
Critical Thinking - The concepts mounted on the display boards must be
relevant to lessons. A single display can help students develop new skills and
interests.
Which of the skills do you already have? Recall your past experiences in making board displays. How do you practice these skills?
Communication skill (both verbal and written) is one of the skills and
my strengths as a teacher. My background in Mass Communication has strengthened
my skills in this aspect.
Which
skills do you still need to develop? Reflect on how you can improve on or
acquire these skills.
I am really not artistic. Of the three phases in visualization, I am
only good at visualizing concepts. Creating and applying my vision into reality
is my weakness. To improve, I need to practice and I need guidance from experts
to help develop myself.
