The School's Resource Learning Center

My Target

At the end of this activity, you will be competent in identifying and classifying resources that facilitate teaching and learning processes.

My Map

It will be an interesting journey to the world of educational technology. A chance to visit and observe a learning resource center of a school will start you off.

My Tools

As you visit and observe the learning resource center, use activity forms provided for you to document your observations. Ask the assistance of the one manning the center courteously.

An Observation Guide for a
LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER

Read the following statements carefully before you observe.

✅Go around the Learning resource Center.
✅See what learning resources are present.
✅Examine how the materials are arranged and how they are classified.
Are they free from dust and moisture? Are they arranged for easy access?
✅Look for the guidelines/procedures for borrowing if materials. Are
these guidelines/procedures posted or available for the users to refer to?
✅Familiarize yourself with the guidelines and procedures. You may choose
to take photos of the center (If Allowed).

The school is equipped with both electronic and non-electronic visual resources. The school has four main buildings: Building 1 - Prathom (Elementary) Building 2 Anuban 3 (Early Childhood Building 3 Matthayom (High School) and Building 4 Anuban 1 (Nursery). The school also has a football field, two basketball courts, a volleyball court, a swimming pool, two canteens, and an open court for recreational activities.

I visited some of the learning resources of the high school department, to wit:

๐Ÿ“ŒLibrary
๐Ÿ“ŒRecording Studio
๐Ÿ“ŒComputer Laboratory
๐Ÿ“ŒScience Laboratory
๐Ÿ“ŒIntensive Room

Every learning resource center is designed and classified according to their uses. A librarian is always stationed in the library. The computer and science laboratories are supervised by the subject teachers when they use the rooms. The intensive room is also open to all classes. Both foreign and Thai teachers can bring in their students and conduct lessons or activities in this room. The radio booth is strictly monitored. Mostly, Grade 12 students are allowed to use the booth but in under close supervision.

After you have observed, classify the resources available in the learning resource center. Please use the activity form provided for you.

List of Available Learning Resource Material

Available Learning Resources
(Enumerate in bullet form)
Characteristics and Unique Capabilities
Teaching Approaches where the Resource is Most Useful

   Print Resources
·         Books (all levels)
·         Magazines
·         Newspapers
·         Flyers/Brochures

These materials are used by both teachers and students. The books are organized by subjects and are arranged from latest to the oldest editions. Magazines and newspapers are placed in a different section of the library. Books are available in both English and Thai languages.
These materials are mostly useful for student researches, references, and recreation. Teachers hold classes in the library and let the students explore and explain what they see inside. A direct experience of doing library research is achieved in this type of teaching especially that, students now prefer to use the internet in researching.

   Audio Resources
·         Microphone
·         Mixer
·         Graphic Equalizer
·         Smart Television
·         DVD Player
·         Speaker

These materials are used to make learning process very interesting and fun. These are used as a medium to transmit sounds and moving images. These adjust image and sound quality to the size of the room and its viewers.

Materials in the audio resources are useful both in academic and non-academic activities. These materials possess the quality of developing real concepts (realism) and relevancy to the subject matter.

   ICT Resources
·         Computers with peripheral hardware
   - Internet Room 1 - 16 sets
   - Internet Room 2 - 30 sets
   - High School Library - 8 sets
   - Intensive Rooms – 3 sets
   - Recording Studio - 2
·         LCD Projectors and Screen - 6 sets

The computer is one of the widely used ICT resources in almost all institutions. It receives inputs, processes the information and transforms them into a different output.

Computers have remarkably reformed everything in the education system. It has transformed teaching methodologies and learning concepts among the students. Also it has revolutionized curriculum content in all levels of education.

   Non-electronic Visual
   Resources
·         Bulletin Boards
·         Display Boards
·         Models
·         Charts

These are two-dimensional materials that sends messages to its viewers These includes verbal texts and visual symbols that provide information to its audience.

These materials add emphasis to the instructional point and easy understanding. These represent concepts, persons, things, etc.

Impression: The school has efficient learning resources for all students, teachers, and even the non-teaching staff. These resources allowed teachers to deliver lessons appropriately and effectively. Students are kept updated with both conventional and non-conventional learning concepts.

My Analysis

Were the learning resources/materials arranged properly according to their functions and characteristics?

The school offers quality education and it can be seen in the learning resources that the school provides. Each learning resource center is placed accordingly based on its functions and characteristics. They are all properly labeled according it is uses. For example, the library is located in the lobby of the building. Computer rooms are in the 3rd and 4th floors, intensive rooms in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th floors, Science Laboratory in 4th and 5th floors, and the radio booth in the 8th floor. The subject teachers are the persons-in-charge of each learning resource centers except for the library and the radio booth. The school has a designated librarian and academic assistant is in-charge of the radio booth.

Do the guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials by the teachers? Why? Why not?

Yes, the guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access and availability to the materials/resources by the teachers. All classrooms from Grades 7 to 12 are equipped with smart television. Teachers always use the Smart TV for their lessons. Visual sides and videos are shown to enhance teaching and learning processes. For computer subjects, students will have to go to the computer rooms as supervised by their computer teacher. Intensive rooms are always free to use especially for drama presentations and dances practices. When using the computer rooms, laboratory rooms, and intensive rooms, the teacher provides rules and regulations for students to follow.

What are the strengths of this Learning Resource Center?

The Information Communication Technology provides technological functions that enable teachers to transfer of knowledge effectively and to improve teaching methodologies that are appropriate for the students’ needs. Likewise, ICT allows students to enjoy interactive learning at the same time it helps them rediscover their skills, new interests, and hidden talents. The learning by doing concept is mostly applied in every learning resources center. Students slowly gains self-confidence, self-trust, motivation, and self-accomplishment.

What are its weaknesses?

Since learning resource centers are mostly technology based, one of its evident weakness is the technology itself. Any technology may cause lag and may require additional devices or updated software to match the compatibility issues of the instructional materials. They are expensive also, thus, the school has to assess the benefits and costs to ensure optimal gains. Mirroring devices (like chrome casts) may improve instructional materials but they are quite costly.

What suggestions can you make?

The school has adequate learning resource centers that are complementary to the needs of the students, the teachers, and non-teaching staff. The only thing that I can recommend is for the school to invest in the continuous upgrades of these resources (e.g. computer software, random access memory, programs, etc.)

My Reflections

Which of the materials in the learning resources caught your interest the most? Why?

Among these learning resource materials, the one that caught my interest is the recording studio. Not all schools, particularly high school, have their own recording studio. This was built in 2006 and since then, this studio has produced various recordings like dubbing for special plays and drama presentations by every graduating class, chorale group recording for the school’s anthem, and live band audition pieces, among others. Our school has produced graduates that made their names in the entertainment industry of Thailand and I can say that the support given to them through these learning resource centers has helped them hone their skills.

Which gadgets/materials are you already confident to use/operate?

The computers and smart television are the gadgets that I am confident in using for my instructional materials. I am computer literate so I can say that my IMs are well presented for my students. I may not be familiar to the newest programs right now but I can surely learn and make use of it to further improve my teaching. Also, teachers are allowed to use smartphones in the classroom for teaching purposes. I do not have to download the video since I can use the “screen mirroring” options of my phone and play the videos that will be directly seen on the TV screen.

Which ones do you feel you need to learn more about?

Since I started teaching in this school six years ago, I always want to learn how they do the recordings in the studio. I think it may be complicated but it will be a lot more fun. It would be nice if I will be able to record, produce and direct an English drama for my students. It will be a truly memorable experience both for me and for them as well.
