My Target
At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in preparing
instructional materials (hand-outs) that are appropriate to the learning
content.
My Map
With a lot of reflective thinking coupled with your creativity, you can
design hand-outs that will truly work to make learning effective. You will see
that preparing hand-outs is not just any paper work. When you produce high
quality hand-outs and eventually try them out, you will discover that, indeed, paper
works!
To reach your target, follow
the below:
1. Prepare handouts for a selected topic. (i.e., flowcharts, schema, graphic organizers).
2. Describe your handouts.
3. Present it to your FS teacher before reproducing it.
My Tools
As you prepare your hand-outs, use the activity form below.
Hand-out Planning Guide
1. What topic do I like to work on?
2. For what grade or year level is my hand-out for?
3. What components do I include in my outline?
4. What type of graphic organizers/ flow-charts/
schemas do I need to use?
5. What references do I use?

My Analysis
After working on your handout, answer the following questions:What are the good features of a handout?
A good hand-out must contain the following features among others:
๐Illustrations
๐Graphics
๐Diagrams
and/or Charts
๐Summarized information
๐Properly sequenced
๐Test of Understanding (Questions to answer or a
worksheet)
However, these features may vary depending on the subject matter and
lesson topics.
Which of these features are present in the handout I made?
All the features mentioned above are present in the handout that I made.
It was comprehensive, easy to understand, and it has all the information that
the students must know about the topic. The details on the handouts were
arranged accordingly as well. Also, I added a "test of understanding"
(worksheet) for the students to practice on.
Which features are not present in the handout I made?
None as all features that a handout must have are all found in the
handout that I made.
My Reflections
What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the handouts? How did you overcome them?
Making a handout is really not difficult but the only challenge in
conceptualizing one is to make sure that the information is concise,
comprehensible, and uncluttered. This is the reason why having an outline helps
a lot because it allows the teacher to write information that is significant to
the topic. Too much information is also not helpful because it can lead to
confusion.
What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of handouts?
Teachers must always use the lesson objectives in creating handouts.
Making an outline is necessary to be able to properly conceptualize the flow of
information. Also, several references will give a more comprehensive and
informative contents that will further enhance students' knowledge about the
topic discussed.
